Shoot Me Now

Sunday, March 3, 2024 (Court Day #631)

It rained this morning around 6 a.m. and I sent out an email notice delaying play at Derby Park until 10 a.m. When I decided to cancel altogether and I was about to click “send”, it started raining! I amended my message to reflect that and club play was officially off the table for today.

Class

The next question was my class at 1:30 p.m. Sean texted me about his class after mine. Go or no go? My wife said it was supposed to start raining about 6 p.m. The next question was the courts. I had Jesse—a former student who lives across the street from Willowbrook Park—check for me. He said three of of the four courts were pretty dry and there was a group out playing a game. Class was on!

When I arrived at 1 p.m., there were two puddles on our two reserved courts.
Henri was already there with a towel that I’d asked students to bring. With that, I was able to take care of two small puddles.

The crazy thing was it ended up lightly raining off and on during the class. I just had to shake my head. My students were amazingly good sports and were keen on continuing to learn. One did opt to step under a tree during one heavier precipitation moment, but it lightened up a few minutes later. I was texting Sean with updates. I told him that had I known the amount of rain, I would have not held class. Sean said he was going to cancel his class.

Games

After class was done, four students stayed and played a game. Former club site coordinator Jim Del Porto was here with a few other players. I asked if I could jump in for a game. The first game went pretty well. The second game was a disaster on my part. I was partnered with Maia against Jim and a woman whose name I forget—I’m not sure if I’d played with her before. Jim and partner were targeting Maia like crazy. I jumped to my right to poach a ball near the kitchen line and hit the ball into the net. I missed a few other shots. It was bad. Maia even kidded me, “Your students are paying to get this kind of certified instruction?” I laughed. I said, “That’s what I get for working with beginners for two hours!”

Nonetheless, I was frustrated and annoyed with my play. I need to get out and play and drill. I feel between rain and injuries and overall lack of play, I’m regressing.

Tennis Pro Pickleball Slur

A tennis pro used pickleball as an insult:
https://www.express.co.uk/sport/tennis/1873241/Andrey-Rublev-disqualified-reilly-opelka-pickleball
To quote the article:
Responding to a post about the disqualification on Instagram, Opelka said: “Bush league. Linesman should get demoted to pickleball ASAP.”

Hey, Opelka, you don’t have to be a butthead.

I never did hear back from the man who reached out to me about lessons via PPR. On Friday, second person, a woman, also reached out through PPR. I wrote back. Still radio silence. Weird. If I reach out to a coach and got an email back, I’d at least reply and say that I was not interested, found a better time fit, whatever. I can only just shrug my shoulders.

Genie Bouchard Video

Not to attack Genie Bouchard, no doubt in short order she’ll be a far better pickleball player than I will be—and maybe she is already—but it appears as though she believed all the tennis player propaganda about how pickleball is easy and that she should could just show up and dominate:
https://www.instagram.com/reel/C2LRexFy1EI/?igsh=ZWMyNDBlOTQyNg==
But that wasn’t the case. To make matters worse, the PPA pre-qualified her for the later rounds, bumping out more qualified players.

Some comments on that post:

selten_fotog:
“A baseball pro cant walk into a cricket pro game and become a pro without spending countless hours mastering the new craft. Sure the similarities of hitting a round ball with a stick are similar but that’s where it ends. Totally different game.”

chaaaise:
“Sock made the transition fairly well.”
[This is a reference to former tennis player Jack Sock.]

selten_fotog:
“Sock didn’t walk onto the court with the naive level of elitist arrogance that she did. So disrespectful of a high level Pickleball Pro to do that to him, I felt terrible for Loong. I do think all the tennis pros who were cringing by their TV stands did get an impressive look at the insane skill and atheism of one of Pickleballs freak athletes so he repped Pickleball well!”
[Buchard was partnered with Tyler Loong.]

Now, I have no idea about Genie Buchard’s preparation or regard for the game of pickleball. But it’s pretty clear she wasn’t ready to be in the final rounds of a pro pickleball tournament. And she wouldn’t have been, but getting a famous name on a court brings eyeballs and eyeballs means money when it comes to advertising.

The Engage backpack was supposed to come today but when I checked the tracking, UPS said there was some delay . . . with no explanation. I just checked again and now it’s showing that it’s supposed to arrive tomorrow. We’ll see!

Famous Relatives

And… just for kicks. I use an online system called Family Tree to dabble in genealogy. And genealogy is fun at times. I got an email from the system and here are some of my relatives from closest to most distant…

The Wright Brothers
Benjamin Franklin
George Washington
Susan B. Anthony
Abraham Lincoln
Charles Dickens
Emily Dickinson
Franklin Roosevelt
Helen Keller
Jane Austen
Winston Churchill
Lucille Ball
Walt Disney
Elvis Presley
John Wayne
Princess Diana
Queen Elizabeth (and the Royal Family, of course!)
Shirley Temple
Babe Ruth
Mohammad Ali (We have common ancestor in the 1500s!)

I’ve known about Washington for decades—my grandfather shared that with me nearly 40 years ago—but all the rest were new to me. Franklin and Washington are the same in terms of closeness of my relationship to them. And the Wright Brothers are one generation closer than those other two. That was perhaps the biggest surprise.

More Like Chess

Tuesday, February 28, 2024 (Court Day #630)

This morning, my wife asked if I was going to play pickleball tonight and that it was probably going to rain later in the week. Truth be told, playing hadn’t even crossed my mind up until that point. By the time I came home for lunch, I had decided that I was going to go play, so I collected everything that I would need and brought it with me to work.

After work, I changed, then dropped off my brother Matt at my parents’ house on my way to Scotts Valley. It has been a very nice sunny day today but by that time it was getting dark and the temperature on my car read 55°F.

CHP

I saw flashing lights in the distance in my rearview mirror. They were approaching quickly, and then I saw there were two of them. I slow down a little bit and hugged the right side of the slow lane to give them as much space as possible. Highway patrol cars. I hope everyone is ok at the other end. They had taken the same exit that I took less than a minute later, their flashing lights disappeared down the main city thoroughfare racing to somewhere.

Skypark

My biggest concern this evening was parking. With the city of Scotts Valley blocking off the overflow parking for the courts, I had a feeling it was going to be a bit of a challenge. But as it was, I was able to park on the street nearby. In the darkness, I saw at least one car parked in the unpaved area and another parked between some trees. As time goes on, doing that could easily result in a ticket.

All the courts were full and there were about 10 people who needed to get into games. There was a pretty typical assortment of regulars there tonight, but there were also a couple of UCSC students—Cait and Diana, whom I met a few weeks ago—and another six who might’ve also been UCSC students but I didn’t ask. Pickleball continues to get more and more popular with younger people.

Games

In my first game, I partnered with Scott against Cassidy and another young woman whose name was given to me but I’ve forgotten. Scott beat them by a score of 11-3 or maybe even 11 -2. There were only two or three games tonight that I considered lopsided or otherwise not super challenging. The rest of the games were pretty good. By the time the lights clicked off shortly after 9:30 p.m., my back was pretty stiff. I’d been pretty tired for at least half an hour and there was definitely a fair part of me that just wanted to go home and rest.

Midway through the evening, I hit my left elbow and little fingers of my left hand with my paddle. That’s a first! I may have hit my fingers once before, but never my elbow! My elbow hurt into the next game and my little fingers were numb too! That was a good whack!

One guy, Mike, whom I’ve seen a few times now at Skypark, asked, “You have such fast hands, what level do you play at?” I told him that either high 3.5 or low 4.0.

It is good to see Matt and Paul, Tim, Max, Tiffany and Nicole, and others. I got into a few good games with David though his girlfriend Minori was not there tonight.

Ouch

I noticed myself wincing at home whenever I turned a certain way. My back was telling me that it wasn’t happy.  I took an ibuprofen and iced my knee.

My right wrist bothered me a little tonight. It had been doing so well. Hopefully, it’s just a small setback.

The NPCA National Championship is coming up next month in San Diego. (National Collegiate Pickleball Association, if you are wondering.) March 15-17. Duke, Texas A&M, Washington, Ohio State, Penn State, University of Florida, Georgia Tech, and others totaling over 50 competing colleges from all across the USA.

Costco

My mom sent me a photo of a pallet inside Costco today. Selkirk has “The Ultimate Premium Pickleball Set” for $69.99 . . . two paddles, some balls, and a sling bag. I don’t know about “ultimate” or “premium”, but it’s probably a good starter set. But, boy, pickleball is getting more and more popular, no?

Ball Not Cracking Up

The PPA is reaping the challenges of partnering exclusively with a brand new ball that was never previously on the market. The Vulcan ball is not garnering a lot of praise on the pro circuit. Supposedly, some start ‘out of round’ and others get ‘out of round’ but then return to round after sitting for a while. Vulcan might have been better off to put the ball on the market, get feedback, improve the ball, THEN pay a ton of money to a pro tour for sponsorship. I’m sure Vulcan will work to improve it, but, boy, how embarrassing for them!

Hey, it’s leap day!

The current forecast calls for a 47% chance of rain on Sunday morning. So Derby Park club play is in question as is my afternoon beginners class.

Growth

I’ll share a tidbit. Pickleball participation grew by 52% in the USA. (It grew 86% in 2022.) Even if growth drops to 10% this year, it’ll pass soccer and maybe even baseball for the most participation among team and racquet sports. Crazy.

Merger

It’s official today. After months of “on again, off again”, the PPA and MLP are now formally under one roof. That took a long time of negotiations, breakdowns, and more negotiations. But it got done!

Friday, March 1, 2024 (No Play)

I was listening to The Picklepod podcast and they were interviewing Tom Webb, the Chief Marketing Officer for the APP. During the discussion, Tom shared that their research shows that the average age of a pickleball player is now 35.8. And that number continues to drop. What also surprised me was the prevalence of pickleball in India. It’s now one of the top five countries in the world for pickleball.

Spaniard Jaume Martinez Vich appeared on the next Picklepod program and described his transition from tennis—he was a D-II national champion—to pickleball: “Pickleball is more like chess.” Ah. I love it. Indeed it is.

Backpack

My replacement PBAW backpack arrived this week. This morning, I moved everything from the one with the split seam to my old generic backpack and kept the new PBAW sealed. The Engage backpack that I ordered is expected next week and if I really like that one, I’ll just sell the PBAW one or gift it to my brother or something.

Ah, the life of a site coordinator.
It’s 8:45 p.m., and I’m gazing out the kitchen window at the dark sky wondering if the gaps in the rain clouds will spread and lead to sun tomorrow morning to dry the courts. Or will a delay until 10 a.m. be enough? Uncertainty. It’s all a bit of a guessing game. I’ll admit it causes me a trace of anxiety. I don’t want to delay or cancel if I don’t have to. But I also don’t want to have to struggle with wet courts . . . or worse case, be responsible for someone slipping and getting injured. Sure, it’s a game, but there can be serious consequences. When in doubt, cancel, but again, I don’t want to ruin people’s fun.

I’m a Liar, Apparently

Sunday, February 25, 2024 (Court Day #629)

As one might expect, my back was tighter this morning than it has been lately. I did take one ibuprofen. It seems like I’ve been taking a lot of it lately, so I want to avoid an excessive amount.

Shoes

In December 2022, already 14 months ago, I ordered a pair of FILA pickleball shoes that were on sale. Yesterday, I took them with me to the tournament because it’s always wise to have a pair of backup shoes. (I learned that lesson the hard way!) I did briefly wear the Fila shoes around the house this past week to make sure that they fit and didn’t hurt my feet—and my feet were fine—but it’s a good idea to get new shoes broken in somewhat before fully relying on them. I figured I’d wear them to open play today.

This morning, my wife said there was possibly a little bit of rain in the forecast as I drove to Derby Park. It was completely cloudy skies. There is a far cry from the weather we had yesterday for the tournament. Honestly, I don’t mind overcast skies since it’s cooler and alleviates the issue of lobs in the sun.

Derby

I arrived at Derby Park at 8:40 a.m. to set up for club play. Barb was the lone person there and she was practicing her serves. It was a chilly 55°F. I was in shorts and a T-shirt, so I was very much hoping we wouldn’t get any sprinkles or, worse, showers! But by 10 o’clock, the clouds had burned off and it turned into a beautiful sunny day in the 60s.

One thing with the FILA shoes is parts of the soles are black. I remember flicking a little rock off the court with my foot and the shoe left a mark on the green surface. Going forward, I’m going to try to stick to purchasing only shoes with white soles.

There were some somewhat fun games today, but I never got into a game where all four players were 3.5 and above. A bit of a bummer.

Seriously?

The most memorable event today was the 30-something man who came with either his girlfriend or wife and what appeared to be her parents. He came shortly after 11:30 a.m. and was confused why the courts were full and what was going on. I explained it was club play and if they wanted to play as a group they were welcome just sign the waiver and then claim a box on the whiteboard and play a game amongst themselves as part of the rotation of the club. But he was not interested in that. I told him when 12 o’clock came, we could clear out a court for him which they could just stay on and play. He was a bit rude about it and pointing out the sign and asking about what the rules were for how long we could have the courts. He was a bit aggressive, but I was kind and patient.

I thought everything was taken care of then about five or ten minutes later, he was being a bit of a jerk confronting Rick A. and Andrew McLeod asking for proof that the club had the courts actually reserved and we were not just claiming so. Basically, he was calling me a liar. I was very polite but I was secretly very irritated. I explained to him that he could check with the City of Santa Cruz and that we’ve had the courts reserved on Sundays for at least eight years! Right then, my game came up and so I had to walk away and leave this guy to the others.

I got into a game with Ted B. against Lisa (petite with an English accent) and Dan, the middle school teacher. I was very distracted and upset about that pushy guy who was being a butthead. Ted and I were down 8-0—not a surprise since Ted was the weakest player plus Dan was playing very well—I looked over and saw that that guy was on a court with his group. That was a relief. I could focus on the game a little more, but I was still annoyed. Ted and I scored five points to make it at least a little bit more respectable, but we did end up losing.

Time to Go

Andrew McLeod agreed to close up the courts for me. I left at 12 o’clock sharp and headed home to eat lunch then head to Willowbrook Park to teach my beginner class.

My back is a little sore today, but it’s not terrible.

Celebrity Injury

I missed this when it happened a few months ago, but 65-year-old famous actress Michelle Pfeiffer got hit in the eye while playing pickleball and got a nice shiner.
Here’s the People article:

New Orleans

I’ll be in Louisiana next month for a trade show. I reached out to Dale, a contact listed on the Places2Play website for New Orleans. This was for the Hilton New Orleans Riverside . . . four indoor courts, $15 fee. I’m not a fan of indoor courts, but it’s better than nothing. I doubt I’ll get to playing pickleball in every state in the USA, maybe I can start to make dent. California, New Mexico, North Carolina. (Plus Spain and Italy.)

Tuesday, February 27, 2024 (No Play)

My back is a still sore. But I may play at Skypark tonight.

New Backpack

As a USA Pickleball Ambassador and as a PPR Certified Coach, I do get some perks in the form of discounts from some pickleball manufacturers. Today, I ordered an Engage Players backpack (the biggest/priciest one they had in stock) and three overgrips from Engage. I’m going to see if I like their backpack more than the PBAW backpack that my family got me for Christmas. The PBAW has some very nice features such as a zipper sleeve on the side that’s perfect for storing 4 balls, a built-in hook to hang it on a chain link fence, sewn-in leash for keys, an assortment of pockets. I’m hoping for something with more pockets and more space, and maybe a bit heavier construction.
