City P&R Meeting about HWP, Skill Rating with A.I.?

Monday, October 13, 2025 (Court Day #861)

It was time once again for our monthly Santa Cruz Pickleball Club board meeting. Being that it was due to rain this afternoon, my wife asked me to take our dog pepper out on a very long walk. Me, being a good husband, did just that. Happy wife, happy life! I wouldn’t be at club play when it started at 9 a.m., that’s for sure.

Brommer Park

I arrived at Brommer at 10:50 a.m. and as I was expecting, but hoping against, the lot was completely full. I did find a parking spot on the street out in front of the park, and just as I got out of my car, a car that was in the lot left. Figures! I shouldn’t complain, he probably only took a few minutes of of my pickleball play away.

Folks waiting for game at 10:57 a.m. There are 21 people in this photo.

I got into a game with Dave Ryan versus Kim and Mike Leffler. (I’ve only played with Mike once, maybe twice, before. He’s a good player.) Dave and I won 11-8. I made a lot of mistakes. It was my first game. And that was a loooong one too.  We had at least four other games end and walk through our court to the gate.

As we walked back to the waiting area, Dave asked to see my paddle. He put his thumbs on the middle and pressed… *crackle*. It had delaminated. I hadn’t noticed. Oops. Time for a new one!

Next up, John Pacholski and I took on Mike Leffler and Trevor. It was a bit of a battle. We ended up losing 7-11.

At 11:57 a.m., I was done. I needed to get to our board meeting.

Board Meeting

With the rain coming in club president March Dettle move the meeting location from the park to his house about five minutes away. The meeting started a little bit after 12:30 p.m. and ran for a couple of hours.

City P&R Commission Meeting

After the board meeting, I went home, ate lunch, showered, went and got gas for my car, and then headed to the City of Santa Cruz Parks & Recreation Commission meeting held in the city council chambers downtown.

I parked then walked a block through the rain to the council chambers.

Once inside, I spotted John Pacholski and took a seat in the last row behind him and Carol Hagen—Shawnté’s mom.

The first topic of discussion for the commission was the removal of what is referred to as a heritage tree, that is, a tree with a trunk over a specified diameter. Removing such a tree requires approval by the city. One never knows, but sometimes these discussions tend to be contentious and take a long time. With the meeting beginning at 4 p.m., by me arriving 20 minutes later, I was fully expecting to catch the tail end of the tree discussion, but instead they had already begun the presentation of the suggested redesign for Harvey West Park.

One of the suggested plans for park up on the big monitor.

The presentation continued for another 30 minutes or so, then the commissioners asked questions of the city staff.

One positive thing was that the pickleball courts were listed on the second line, just after “Sports Field Improvements”, near the top in terms of priority of phases.

Public comments weren’t opened up until about 5:10 p.m. when people lined up to speak.

The first to speaker was the president of the swimming group for seniors, who was there to advocate for the swimming pool.

The first pickleball player to speak was John. He said that he’s been coming to speak before the commission for nine years, originally with Dave Allenbaugh, but yet Santa Cruz still does not have any permanent courts.

John at the podium.

A couple of other people spoke then club president Mark Dettle went up to the podium and spoke about the need for more pickleball courts.

Not long after, Carol got up and spoke about how pickleball provides exercise and socializing for older community members.

A couple of women got up to speak about installing artificial turf on the Little League fields so they could be used more a year around.

Once they were done, I went up to speak. I gave my name, then I shared that I was a fourth-generation city resident and then my great uncle was mayor at one point. I mentioned that I recently played pickleball in the City of Montague, and with a population of 900, they have four permanent courts and there are lights. I mentioned that Santa Cruz is considered progressive, but we are far behind on the pickleball trend. I told them that the average age in the USA of a pickleball player is 35 and dropping. I finished off my various points. On my way back to my seat, John held up his palm to give me an approving “high five”.

The commission talked a bit more, agreed about the exact verbiage of the motion, then voted to approve the motion, sending the plan to the City Council for approval of the draft. This is only a waypoint and funding is needed and a final plan approved months or even years from now, but things are looking good so far.

This popped up on my social media, talking about A.I. analysis of pickleball games and rating a player’s skill level via A.I.:

Now, PBVision is not brand new, in fact, here’s a video from a game I played in at Brommer taken by Conner last year that I’ve shared here before:

Here’s the article alluded to in the Instagram post:
https://www.speakpickleball.com/reviews/pbvision-review

It seems that the new aspect of this is the rating ability. If it works, it would be pretty nifty. PBVision said they are planning to license video of pro matches and use that to teach the algorithm.

Rain

With rain today, no pickleball play tonight at Skypark.

The Pickleball Slam shared a post on Instagram today quoting tennis pro convert to pickleball Genie Bouchard:
“People think there’s an automatic transition from tennis and pickleball and there’s not.
It’s a completely different sport requiring different skills.”

So, for all those tennis players who have never played pickleball yet claim it’s so easy, take it from someone who played the pro tennis tour.

SCPC Party, Brommer Sunday

Sunday, October 12, 2025 (Court Day #860)

Last night was the annual Santa Cruz Pickleball Club Party. It was held at Bargetto‘s winery in Soquel. I left work early and arrived at the winery about 15 minutes before it was supposed to start. I brought the “Welcome” sign that I had made along with a couple of tabletop signs thanking event donors. The gathering was a quite enjoyable. Every year, it’s sometimes difficult to recognize people when you can see their face. That sounds backwards, but, for instance, I never make an appearance at Brommer Park without wearing a cap and sunglasses.

Rachel, Sycha, Ying Francis, Irene, Mike, me, Pauly.

What is really hard thing for me is having former students walk up and greet me. Most of the students that I teach, I’ve never seen before the first class. I see them up to four times over the course of the four-week session and then I may not see them again for months or sometimes even a year or two. But they will remember me! It can make for a somewhat awkward interaction sometimes. As much as I wish I could remember everyone, that’s not realistic for me.

Brommer Park

It was 63°F and not a cloud in the sky as I made my way to Brommer Park. I arrived around 10 a.m. It was a light crowd today and at no point were all the courts full.

I played a game with the computer guy Jordan Rein, against a couple of good players. That was a really fun one. We pulled off a win. After a high ball at the net was slammed in my feet, I returned it gently into their kitchen. After that rally was finished, Jordan paid me a compliment, “That was the reset of the day!”

Trevor and I played against Mexican Tony and Mo’s husband Frank, we won 11–7.

I checked the time and it was 11:56. Time to go home, eat lunch, and get ready to teach.

Today was a mix of really phenomenal shots and dumb shots like me attacking balls that ended up in my side of the net. It was a combination of maybe not getting low enough or overswinging.

NFL

Philadelphia Eagles running back AJ Dillon is a pickleball fan:

”All I’m saying is that the rate at which I got better is a generational run, I can be the Lebron James of pickleball. I can be the Messi of pickleball. Just give me time.”

Profesional athletes often talk a big game. I never expect to see AJ Dillion at the top of the pro pickleball ranks, but, hey, prove me wrong, AJ!

Freaky Friday Clip, Glasses, HWP

Tuesday, October 7, 2025 (Court Day #859)

There’s a new Freaky Friday movie sequel coming out, and apparently it has a pickleball tournament sequence, although supposedly most of it is being edited out. Here are some of the missing scenes:

Skypark

The lot was full, but I didn’t have to park too far away. It was overcast and dark enough that I didn’t need my sunglasses, so I left them in the car. It’s that time of year when it’s getting darker earlier and you can definitely tell.

Mo help me warm up on an empty court. Spencer—who had just played with Mo—didn’t join us, he went and got into a singles game with Marquis on the next court.

First Game

Pauly and Maria joined us and we played mixed doubles with Maria as my partner. I would say that was the fairest combination with Maria be the weakest player and me being the strongest player.

Pauly and Mo took a lead, but then Maria and I took the serve and went on a long run, racking up 8 points. In the end, they won 12-10. It was an entertaining game. Mo had a few really nice shots.

The next game was Alex and myself against Pauly and Maria. As you would expect, it was a lopsided win for us, 11-3.

Matt Babb’s friend Aaron Hicks arrived and I warmed him up. Marquis and Matt teamed up against Aaron and me. Aaron and I lost, and that would happen in three more games. I didn’t mind. I will always take the toughest combination of opponents. Marquis was going to leave after the third game, but I convinced him to stay for one more.

Marquis, after I hit a winner off his drive from the baseline, commented how he drove the ball as hard as he could and I simply took all of its power off and—as Marquis described it, “boop”—dropped it short and it bounced twice before his partner Matt could get to it.

Our fourth game wrapped up at 8:23 p.m.

It was a slower night for some reason. If you could get a foursome together, you could go into a court without waiting.

And?

I can’t believe the number of times I hit the white tape tonight. It was frustrating. I’m really starting to wonder if I should wear actual glasses at night. I’m actually slightly nearsighted but not enough to typically bother to wear corrective lenses. I think I would need to get special durable glasses since sooner or later I’d get hit in the face and I would need those lenses to be securely held in place in strong frames. The distances glasses I do have have very flimsy frames. Maybe next time I go to the optometrist I’ll ask about that.

Harvey West Park

Club president Mark Dettle sent out a link to the rest of the board about an upcoming public meeting about Harvey West Park. The City of Santa Cruz Parks & Rec had shared with him a link to the park redesign, which has since been removed, unfortunately. But here’s an image of one of the two configurations of pickleball courts:

The other configuration has only five courts, not eight.

Friday, October 10, 2025 (No Play)

I had a nonprofit board meeting last night, so no pickleball play for me.

Social Media

This is a really nice rally between Anna Leigh Waters/Anna Bright and Lea Jansen/Lacy Schneemann:

An aside, midway through the rally, there is a funny moment where the ball drops very close to the net and AnnaB has to scoop it up and ALW does a prancing pony move with her right leg… maybe she was trying to will the ball over or she was thinking the rally was done… I have no idea:
