Adventures of Andrew Lenz and a Yellow Ball

Climbing Back Up

Friday, March 23, 2018 (Court Day #138)

I arrived at Brommer a bit late, 9:20, to find a big delivery truck stuck in the entrance to the parking lot. It was hoping to do a U-turn, but misjudged the steep angles and ended up with his rear drive wheels suspended in the air. Oops. So I parked on the street and trekked in. It serves me right for having a slow start to the morning—if I’d been a few minutes earlier, I would have gotten into the lot!

As I walked past the courts to the waiting area, Dean, kidding around, yelled, “What happened to your gold shirt?” “It turned to silver!” (I was wearing a gray T-shirt.)

On top of the 32 people we had playing on the courts, we had another 20 or so waiting to play. Full house!

I had an early game with Steve against a couple of players. It was embarrassing. It was an error-fest on my part. Poor Steve, but he was patient.

I played a game with Karen as my partner. After a few points, I told her, “I should just go home.” “What? No, the day is just getting started!” Karen is super encouraging. She’ll say things like “nice return” when you hit it into the net, but she’ll actually mean it!

But the day did get better. I mean, how much worse could it get? My play had nowhere to go but up, right?

Playing with Eric

Eric and I got a game together and took on John P. and Chuck. John voiced that it would be a difficult game. Eric and I won 11-4.

Eric and I played again with Chuck, but this time with Kevin as his partner. Even though Kevin is unquestionably a stronger player than John, Eric and I still won 11-0.

I forgot who it was, Kevin or Kent, who said, “You two play well together. Your play really compliments each other.”

After the previous game, Kevin was ready for another with us. This time, we got Kent to replace Chuck. We’d be going up against two advanced players. Eric and I made a lot more errors. I missed at least three serves in the game. Silly. This game was not to be ours. We lost to Kent and Kevin 6-11. We did switch to a hard ball at their request after playing with a Onix Fuse the previous two games and balls do act differently. After a few points and my miscalculated drop shot, I turned to Eric and said, “I like the other ball!”

I left Brommer at about 12:30 p.m.. Home then to work!

I’m getting a kick out of reading your daily posts. I just wish you’d take pictures of the people, with their first names, so I can place them.
