Thursday, September 1, 2022 (Court Day #540)
I had pipe band practice tonight until about 8 o’clock. The big debate in my mind was to make the trip all the way out to Scotts Valley or simply stay home. I decided to go play pickleball after making a very brief stop at my house to drop off my pipe case and make a quick pitstop. I had already changed clothing earlier on the chance that I might end up playing.
I got to Skypark about 8:15 p.m., and parking at that time was easy, as I had expected it to be.
There were four courts still in use when I walked in, along with about half a dozen people just hanging out at the bench near the exit.
Warming up with Avery
Avery was there and kindly offered to warm me up, so we dinked for about 6 to 8 minutes. There is a game going with Charles and Tim against Texas Mike and the better player Dan.
After that game was over—which was quite a close one since I was listening and I heard them call the score 11-10—Charles stepped out allowing me to get into a game and I partnered with Dan against Tim and Mike.
It was a very enjoyable and challenging game. Dan and I had been leading 6-3 partway through, then they came back and took the lead. But we got focused and ended up winning 11-9.
They wanted a rematch, so we switched sides. Dan and I were down 1-8. But I turned to Dan and told him that this game was still winnable. We went on a run and tied up the score 8-8. Unfortunately, Tim and Mike ended up winning this one 11-8. Mike made a great passing shot past me down the right sideline, which continues to be a weakness for me. I felt a little bit better a few minutes later when he made the exact same shot against Dan when he was on the right side instead of me.
They were both great and balanced games.
As we took down a portable net, Mike said that he be leaving in a couple of weeks for his move with his wife to Texas. Such a bummer. Mike is such a nice guy and a strong player too. There’s going to be a going away party for him next week at a local restaurant in the evening. I plan to go to that. Come to think of it, I really need to let my wife know about that one!
Dan had a cooler with some beers in it and he shared with the group of us.
As everyone went when our separate ways, and I said “good night” to Dan from my car window and he said he really enjoyed the games. Yes, they were quite enjoyable and well worth my trip out to Skypark for a little over of only an hour of play. Very fun.
I missed at least 3-4 shots low to my backhand. I really need to drill this shot. It continues to be a weakness. After shoulder surgery, it just hasn’t been the same.
As I laid in bed trying to go to sleep, the outside of right knee was stinging. Not good. The MRI a couple of years ago showed a small tear in there. I hope it’s not worse.
