Jason At All Times. Blog Found!

Friday, September 2, 2022 (Court Day #541)

One of my staff called in sick this morning, the one who usually opens the store, so I had to quickly arrange someone else to open so I could go to pickleball. It took a little finagling but I was able to get someone and though it still made me a few minutes late Brommer Park. Parking was easy early on for those like me, but later on there were 57 pickleball players.

Jason

As I was hanging up my backpack on the chain link fence, Jason walked over. He said he had been in a game but got someone to take over for him so he could play with me. We went on to spend the next three and a half hours as partners in preparation for our tournament a week from tomorrow.

Mistakes or Strategy

Earlier, Jason and I were playing a game and against Dave Cox and Hugh. We were ahead something like 6-3 or 7-3, but then we imploded. We missed a series of our serves in sequence and hit a number of our service returns out … essentially handing points to Dave and Hugh. We lost that game due to all the unforced errors. After the game, Dave was insisting that the reason we lost the game was their strategy change. After I drove an early winner at Dave, Dave told Hue to target Jason instead of me. Dave is claiming that I had overshown my hand with that early shot and they had adjusted accordingly and therefore won the game. Maybe Dave is right, but I’m of the opinion that he’s mistaken. I really believe it was our series of unforced errors that handed the game away.

Dave said he’s playing in 4.0 next weekend at the Chamisal tournament. I don’t believe that’s the right rating for him. But maybe 60+ will make it easier.

Uh, Nope. Not Yet!

Jason and I signed up on the court reservation board and a man named Richard added his name after ours. I’d never played with Richard and I’d never seen him sign up in red before. I was a little concerned so I walked over and asked him what his rating was in tournaments And he replied that he doesn’t play in tournaments but that he was tired and playing in games where other players couldn’t get the ball back over the net. I told him I understand because the novice players sign up as intermediate, and the immediates sign up at advanced as a result.
Wai rounded out our foursome. The game was very far from challenging. I think they might’ve scored one point but that was it is extremely lopsided in favor of Jason and myself. He and I were a bit more careful signing up in later games. Afterward Richard apologized to me for not giving us a challenging game, but I told him, ”Hey, sometimes you have to try it to know.”

Club Shirts

Jackie was there selling pre-ordered club  shirts. I asked if mine was there. The volunteer site coordinators get virtually no perks or rewards for all the hours and headaches we deal with. But the board decided to reward us with free club shirts. “Four years and all I get is this lousy T-shirt!” Kidding. Far from that. Truth be told, I appreciate the thought and the shirt! She dug out the shirt labeled for me. Thumbs up!

Tighten Up That Game!

The most educational games of the day were Jason and myself playing against Nolan—who arrived late in the session—and Matt who lives in Seattle but who’s going through a divorce and owns a home in La Selva Beach nearby. (I’d never met Matt before. Super nice. A big African American dude.) Nolan is a solid 4.0 player. Easily. He very rarely missed a shot, has good power, and good placement. Jason and I lost the first game 11-1, lost second game 11-2, and then changed our strategy a little bit and made it much more of a game, We still lost the last game but it was 11-7 and not a total blowout. The key was utilizing the soft game far better and not speeding up the ball at Nolan who has very quick hands and can handle a quick shot.

Blog Discovered

As I mentioned above, Hugh was there today with his dog Groot. Hugh said he discovered my (this) blog. He was excited and said it really good, he even went back a year and read all the entries. Hugh said he writes local articles for a living—the Good Times, the Register Pajaronian, and others. He asked if I had professional writing experience. Nah, but high praise coming from someone who writes for a living!

And…Out!

At 12:45 I was in my car and heading home to shower, change, eat lunch, and then head to work.

Toe

In one game, my right big toe got quite painful with certain motions. That toenail is experiencing some issue. I’m not sure what it is, but I should get it checked out by a doctor sooner or later. When I got home, I trimmed the nail really short, that should help.

Highland Games

I’m heading to the annual Highland games held in Pleasanton tomorrow. It’ll be fun to connect with old friends and enjoy some music and some fish and chips!

Brief, but Good Night

Thursday, September 1, 2022 (Court Day #540)

I had pipe band practice tonight until about 8 o’clock. The big debate in my mind was to make the trip all the way out to Scotts Valley or simply stay home. I decided to go play pickleball after making a very brief stop at my house to drop off my pipe case and make a quick pitstop. I had already changed clothing earlier on the chance that I might end up playing.

Skypark

I got to Skypark about 8:15 p.m., and parking at that time was easy, as I had expected it to be.

There were four courts still in use when I walked in, along with about half a dozen people just hanging out at the bench near the exit.

Warming up with Avery

Avery was there and kindly offered to warm me up, so we dinked for about 6 to 8 minutes. There is a game going with Charles and Tim against Texas Mike and the better player Dan.

Game Time

After that game was over—which was quite a close one since I was listening and I heard them call the score 11-10—Charles stepped out allowing me to get into a game and I partnered with Dan against Tim and Mike.

It was a very enjoyable and challenging game. Dan and I had been leading 6-3 partway through, then they came back and took the lead. But we got focused and ended up winning 11-9.

They wanted a rematch, so we switched sides. Dan and I were down 1-8. But I turned to Dan and told him that this game was still winnable. We went on a run and tied up the score 8-8. Unfortunately, Tim and Mike ended up winning this one 11-8. Mike made a great passing shot past me down the right sideline, which continues to be a weakness for me. I felt a little bit better a few minutes later when he made the exact same shot against Dan when he was on the right side instead of me.

They were both great and balanced games.

Texas Bound

As we took down a portable net, Mike said that he be leaving in a couple of weeks for his move with his wife to Texas. Such a bummer. Mike is such a nice guy and a strong player too. There’s going to be a going away party for him next week at a local restaurant in the evening. I plan to go to that. Come to think of it, I really need to let my wife know about that one!

Texas Mike Ballard

Dan had a cooler with some beers in it and he shared with the group of us.

As everyone went when our separate ways, and I said “good night” to Dan from my car window and he said he really enjoyed the games. Yes, they were quite enjoyable and well worth my trip out to Skypark for a little over of only an hour of play. Very fun.

Problem Areas

I missed at least 3-4 shots low to my backhand. I really need to drill this shot. It continues to be a weakness. After shoulder surgery, it just hasn’t been the same.

Right Knee

As I laid in bed trying to go to sleep, the outside of right knee was stinging. Not good. The MRI a couple of years ago showed a small tear in there. I hope it’s not worse.

Tourney Prep. Claire from SJ. Busy.

Sunday, August 28, 2022 (Court Day #538)

Arrived about 8:50 a.m. at Derby Park to set up. There were about half a dozen players at the far end of the courts. There was a problem. Most of the courts were wet, especially the ones closest to the gate. My home driveway and street were dry—I checked—which is typically a good indicator, but not today. I immediately texted Mark D. and Tony S. to send out a “delay until 10 a.m.” email notice to the club. Mark responded about 15 minutes later saying he couldn’t get into the system to send the notice. At 9:57, Tony responded that he had been “out on a ride”. Needless to say, no notice went out, so I did my best to manage things. At first only, four nets were set up. Later, I allowed the last two nets to be set up, but initially as “dinking only”.

Play

My first game was with newish players Kevin, Isaac, and their friend Corrine. They borrowed club paddles. I played lefty in that game. I’m rustier than I should be playing lefty. It’s good for me to do that now and then. (I didn’t mention it in my last post, but I made a very nice crosscourt dink lefty at Brommer on Friday—the shot would have been very difficult righty, so I switched to get a better angle on it.)

Claire from San Jose

Rick had invited a female player from San Jose, Claire, to play at Derby. And she was rock solid. Fast serves, quick hands, power. I’d take her as a tournament partner in a heartbeat. Rick and Claire beat Ted and me. Later, Jason and I played against Claire and Briana. Briana signed up as advanced but is an intermediate. They got clobbered. I think it ended at 11-2 or 11-1. And we weren’t targeting Briana. I just goes to show how important a partner is.

Newbies

I trained some newbies . . . a married couple Fatima and Fred, and a woman named Sharon. I explained basic rules and strategy and played two games with them. They were very appreciative. Fatima and Fred had watched instructional videos so caught on quickly. Sharon came in cold and took more reminding as it was all completely new to her.

Jason and I played Charles and Rick and won 11-8.

Derby at 1:11 p.m. Two hold over club games, but not the rest!

As I left at about 1:15 p.m. , every court was full. There were two singles games and four doubles games. Barefoot Terry’s group of women had brought their own net. Three nets were city-owned nets. I asked Rick A. (the Wednesday site coordinator) if he could stow the remaining two nets for me and he agreed. There was a family of five waiting outside the fence for an opportunity to play. I’ve been playing 5 1/2 years and I’ve never seen this happen before. This sport is growing like crazy.

Monday, August 29, 2022 (No Play)

Today, I finally got the SCPC board to provide me access to the email system so I can send out my own club weather delay notices. It was supposed to happen a while ago, but it got bogged down. Now I have an account and I don’t have to wait for someone else. I can do it myself!
